Giving Tuesday!
There are SO many worthy charities to choose from for your holiday giving. If you want to support writers, storytelling, educational programs, and literacy, here are just a few literary nonprofits to consider—with a snapshot of what they’re about, in their own words!
We Need Diverse Books
About: We Need Diverse Books™ is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and a grassroots organization of children’s book lovers that advocates essential changes in the publishing industry to produce and promote literature that reflects and honors the lives of all young people.
Words Without Borders
About: Founded in 2003, Words Without Borders promotes cultural understanding through the translation, publication, and promotion of the finest contemporary international literature. Their publications and programs open doors for readers of English around the world to the multiplicity of viewpoints, richness of experience, and literary perspective on world events offered by writers in other languages. They seek to connect international writers to the general public, to students and educators, and to print and other media and to serve as a primary online location for a global literary conversation.
Association of Writers & Writing Programs
About: Association of Writers & Writing Programs' services and programs reach nearly 50,000 writers, students, teachers, editors, publishers, and arts administrators, and the organization is among the most wide-reaching sources of advocacy and support for the literary community.
National Novel Writing Month
About: National Novel Writing Month believes in the transformational power of creativity. They provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds—on and off the page.
Fairfax Library Foundation
And I must include my current place of work! I’m proud of the work we do enhancing a library system, from providing picture books to under-served preschoolers to funding educational programs to book clubbers.
About: Fairfax Library Foundation exists solely to enhance the programs, services, and collections of the Fairfax County Public Library. Gifts to the Foundation supplement public funding to help the library expand its reach to children and adults in every corner of our community.
What are your other favorite literary nonprofits? I want to help spread the word!
