Holiday Book Confession
I like all the books I read (and write!) to have at least a little romance. I love romance! I like my romance on the side of an epic adventure, or a little edgy, or funny. I don’t usually like my romance super-sentimental, sugary sweet. But there’s one time of year when I crave all the gooey, lovey-dovey stories … Christmas!
Specifically, I like holiday romance novels—the equivalent of the Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel. I only watch movies like that once a year, and I want to read all the wholesome romance this time of year, too. But only if it has wintry, holiday themes.
Like what, you ask? Towns called Christmas. Or towns that have over-the-top holiday festivals. Ladies who work in Christmas shops, or bakeries. Snowy scenes, cats named Mistletoe, characters who start out as Scrooges but turn into Christmas heroes. Have you read these stories?
They make me feel good. They get me in the holiday mood. They help me de-stress during a time of year when a lot of extra obligations (shopping! Decorating! Baking!) add stress.
So I’m not going to be ashamed … I love cheesy holiday romance novels!
(And maybe one day I’ll write one, but it’s not what you’ll find in THE LAST FIRST DAUGHTER. TLFD takes place in the summer, with a complex, hopefully realistic love story—on the side of big adventure.)
My Holiday Favorites:
The Fool’s Gold holiday stories by Susan Mallery. I recently read and adored Sleigh Bells in the Snow by Sarah Morgan.
A Christmas Carol. I LOVE the original Dickens.
I honestly cannot tell them apart and I don’t care—Lifetime or Hallmark Christmas movies!
Any holiday baking special.
Rocky Road Fudge, Grandma’s recipe. Or Peanut Butter Cup Cookies, also Grandma's recipe, given away in this Evernight Teen blog!
Nutcracker Suite and the new holiday album by the amazing Lindsey Stirling. It’s classy, jazzy Christmas music—without the annoying tunes.
Cozying up in front of the fire with hot cocoa and a holiday romance novel or movie. Of course!
What are your holiday favorites?
I'll take recommendations, please! Happy reading, and Happy Holidays!
